The Department of Higher Mathematics was founded in 1929.
During the years of its existence the department provided training for students from different areas of mathematics: “Linear and vector algebras”, “Analytical geometry”, “Mathematical analysis”, “Differential equations”, “The theory of functions of a complex variable”, “Operational calculus”, “Probability theory and mathematical statistics”.
Nowadays the Department of Higher Mathematics teaches the following disciplines:
“Mathematics” (speciality “Applied Mechanics”);
“Higher Mathematics” (specialities “Economics”, “Entrepreneurship, Trade and Stock Exchanges”, “Marketing”, “Accounting and Taxation”, “Automation and Computer-Integrated Technologies”, “Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics”, “Food Technology”, “Hotel and restaurant business”, “Computer sciences and information technologies”, ” Computer engineering “, “Ecology”, “Environmental protection technologies”, “Power engineering”, “Oil and gas engineering and technology”, ” Heat power engineering”);
“Higher and Applied Mathematics” (specialities “Entrepreneurship, Trade and Stock Exchanges”, “Management”, “Public Management and Administration”);
“Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics” (specialities “Economics”, “Entrepreneurship, Trade and Stock Exchanges”, “Marketing”, “Accounting and Taxation”, “Computer Science and Information Technologies”);
«Mathematical methods and models in computer calculations» (specialities «Power engineering», «Oil and gas engineering and technologies», «Heat power engineering», «Power engineering, electrical engineering and electromechanics»);
“Probability Theory, Probabilistic Processes and Mathematical Statistics” (speciality “Computer Engineering”).
In order to improve mathematical education, additional disciplines are itroduced for PhD candidates and PhD students:
“Mathematical and software research” (led by professor Kirilov V. Kh.);
“Methods of mathematical modeling” (led by professor Shvets V. T.).
The Department of Higher Mathematics takes the leading place for scientific work among the departments of ONAFT. In 2004, under the leadership of the associate professor Kuzakon V.M. the Department of Higher Mathematics organized an international scientific conference “Geometry in Odessa”, which became an annual scientific holiday for geometers and topologies of all regions of Ukraine and many foreign countries.
The following organizations and universities became co-organizers of the conference: the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine; Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Moscow State University, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Tver State University, Odessa National University, Odessa State Environmental University.
For more than ten years, the participants of the conference have shared their achievements in the following directions:
- Algebraic methods in geometry;
- Differential geometry in general;
- Geometry and topology of differentiated varieties;
- General and algebraic topology;
- Geometric and topological methods in natural sciences;
- History and teaching methods of mathematics;
- Geometric questions of mathematical analysis.
During this time, the international conference was attended by representatives of 26 countries: Ukraine, Austria, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Russia, Romania, Syria, Slovakia, USA , Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, France, Czech Republic, Estonia, Japan.
The International Scientific Journal “Proceegings of the international geometry center” is published from 2008, according to the results of scientific achievements of the conference participants. Since 2010, it has been recognized as a specialized scientific publication of Ukraine in the field of mathematical sciences. The editors of the journal include 30 mathematicians from 10 countries. Four members of the department (V. Kh. Kirilov, N. G. Konovenko, Yu. S. Fedchenko, V. T. Shvets) are members of the editorial board of the journal.
The journal cooperates with the following citation and referencing bases:
- Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine
- International number of scientific periodicals issn;
- RINC (elibrary.ru);
- Index copernicus international;
- Google scholar;
- Directory of open access scholarly resources (road);
- Open academic journals index (oaji);
- Directory indexing of international research journals – citefactor;
- Bielefeld academic search engine (base).
Currently, at the Department of Higher Mathematics work:
two professors – V. Kh. Kirilov, V. T. Shvets;
six associate professors – N. V. Vaspanova, A. V. Vityuk, N. G. Konovenko, O. P. Ugolnikov, Yu. S. Fedchenko, N.P. Khudenko;
